Range bags
Ammunition is dense. A bag that felt fine empty in a store is a different object with five hundred rounds of 9mm in it.
The failure points are always the same and always predictable: the bottom seam under ammunition weight, the main zipper, and the shoulder strap attachment. Buy for those three, and treat pockets as a secondary concern.
What actually matters
- Denier tells you thread weight, not durability. 1000D nylon is heavier and generally tougher than 600D, but coating, weave and stitching matter as much. A well-built 600D bag beats a badly built 1000D one.
- Reinforced bottom or a bag board. Weight concentrates on the base. Look for a stiffened panel, doubled fabric, and feet that keep the fabric off wet concrete.
- Zippers are the number one failure. Large-tooth zippers from a reputable maker, with pulls you can work wearing gloves, and storm flaps that keep grit out of the track.
- Dedicated pistol compartments earn their space. Separated, padded pistol slots keep muzzles pointed somewhere sensible and stop optics banging into steel mag bodies.
- Think about what the bag does at the bench. A wide mouth that stays open, a bright interior lining so you can find a small part, and external pockets for the things you touch constantly — plugs, glasses, a marker.
