The hearing maths
Noise-induced hearing loss is cumulative, painless while it happens, and permanent. It is also almost entirely preventable, and the arithmetic is simple once someone shows it to you.
The cells that convert sound into nerve signals in the human cochlea do not regenerate. Damage to them is permanent, it accumulates over a lifetime of exposures, and impulse noise — a gunshot rather than a factory floor — can cause it in a single unprotected event. There is no recovery and no treatment that restores what's gone.
This is the least interesting purchase discussed anywhere on this site and easily the most consequential.
Decibels are logarithmic, and that matters
The decibel scale is logarithmic, so intuition fails badly. An increase of 10 dB represents roughly ten times the sound intensity. An increase of 20 dB is roughly a hundred times.
Occupational guidance treats sustained exposure around 85 dBA as the level at which hearing conservation becomes necessary, and permissible exposure time falls sharply as level rises. Muzzle blast from centrefire firearms sits far above that — commonly cited in the region of 140 to 175 dB peak depending on cartridge, barrel length and whether a muzzle brake is fitted. That is not a "limit your exposure time" level. That is a level at which a single unprotected shot can cause permanent injury.
What NRR actually is
The Noise Reduction Rating is a single-number rating derived from laboratory testing under a standardised procedure, and it appears on hearing protection sold in the United States under EPA labelling rules.
Two things about it matter:
- It's a laboratory figure. Testing uses trained subjects and carefully fitted protectors. Real-world attenuation is routinely and substantially lower, because real fit is worse.
- It's derived from continuous-noise testing. Impulse noise like gunfire behaves differently from steady industrial noise, so the number is an imperfect guide to what a protector does against a muzzle blast.
Derating
Because of the gap between laboratory and reality, NIOSH publishes derating guidance for real-world estimates: reduce the labelled NRR by 25% for earmuffs, by 50% for formable earplugs, and by 70% for other earplug types. So an NRR 31 formable plug, in practice, is planned around roughly 15 dB of protection.
The single most important consequence is this: fit dominates the rating. A well-fitted NRR 26 muff outperforms a badly seated NRR 33 plug. Foam plugs must be rolled thin, inserted deeply while pulling the ear up and back, and held while they expand. Most people insert them barely past the canal opening and get a fraction of the labelled protection.
What doubling up actually gives you
Plugs under muffs is standard practice, and the common misconception is that the ratings add. They don't. NRR 33 plugs under NRR 30 muffs does not give you 63 dB of protection, or anything close to it.
The reason is that sound reaches the cochlea by more than one path. Once the air path through the ear canal is blocked twice over, transmission through the skull and soft tissue — bone conduction — becomes the limiting factor, and no external protector addresses it.
NIOSH guidance for dual protection is to take the higher of the two NRR values and add approximately 5 dB. That's the realistic estimate.
Five decibels sounds unimpressive. On a logarithmic scale it represents a meaningful reduction in delivered energy, and it is well worth doing in the situations that need it:
- Indoor ranges, where blast reflects off walls and ceiling and the effective exposure is far worse than an open line.
- Beside braked rifles — a muzzle brake redirects gas and blast sideways, and the shooter next to one takes a substantially harsher exposure than the person firing it.
- Any high-volume day, since exposure is cumulative.
- Large-calibre rifles and short-barrelled firearms generally.
Electronic protection is a safety feature
Electronic muffs and in-ear units use a microphone, a compression circuit and a speaker to pass ordinary sound at normal volume while clamping down hard on impulses. The effect is that you hear range commands, conversation and your own rifle's bolt clearly, while the shot itself is attenuated.
This is not a convenience. A shooter who can hear a cease-fire is safer than one who can't, and passive protection strong enough to be effective also blocks the instructions that keep a range safe. It also removes the temptation to lift a muff to hear someone, which is where a lot of real exposure happens.
Look at the attack time — how quickly the circuit clamps — and whether it uses level-dependent compression rather than simply cutting out, which is far less disorienting.
Practical rules
- Double up indoors, always. Treat it as the default rather than a decision.
- Fit before rating. A protector you wear correctly beats a higher-rated one you don't.
- Never lift a muff to talk on a hot line. Use electronic protection instead.
- Protect bystanders and children to the same standard as shooters. Youth-sized muffs exist; a spectator at a range is exposed to the same blast.
- Keep spares in the bag. Foam plugs cost almost nothing and the day you forget your muffs shouldn't be a day you shoot unprotected.
- Consider custom-moulded in-ear if you shoot often. Higher up-front cost, but a proper seal you'll actually keep in — which beats a high-NRR muff you take off between strings.
If you already have symptoms
Persistent ringing, muffled hearing after a range session that doesn't clear, or difficulty following conversation in a noisy room are all worth taking to an audiologist. A baseline hearing test is genuinely useful if you shoot regularly — it lets you track change over time rather than discovering loss once it's substantial. Existing damage can't be reversed, but further loss is preventable, and knowing where you stand changes how carefully you protect what's left.
