What the rating promises

Most residential gun safes are certified against a short attack with a limited set of hand tools. Knowing exactly what that means changes what you should be shopping for.

"Safe" is doing a lot of work in the phrase "gun safe." Most products sold under that name are Residential Security Containers — a real certification with a real test behind it, but a much lower bar than the word "safe" implies to most buyers.

What RSC certifies

The dominant standard is UL 1037, Residential Security Container. Certification means a sample was subjected to a defined attack, by a technician, using a specified limited tool set, for a specified net working time, without being opened.

RSC Level I is the common residential grade and involves a short attack — on the order of five minutes of net working time with common hand tools. RSC Level II is a substantially harder test with a longer attack window and a broader tool set.

Above these sit the commercial ratings — UL TL-15 and TL-30, which describe resistance to tool attack for fifteen and thirty minutes respectively, with more capable tooling. These are genuine vault-grade products and they cost accordingly.

An RSC rating is meaningful. It defeats opportunistic theft, curious children, and the person with a crowbar and limited time. It is not a bank vault, and marketing rarely draws that distinction clearly.

"Meets or exceeds" is not a certification. If a product is certified, the listing will name the standard and the level, and it will be verifiable through the certifying body. Phrases like "built to RSC standards" or "meets or exceeds UL requirements" without a listing number are marketing, not certification.

Gauge numbers run backwards: a smaller number means thicker steel.

Here is the part manufacturers would rather you didn't focus on: the body is usually thinner than the door, and the body is where the attack goes. A thick composite door with an impressive array of locking bolts is easy to photograph and easy to sell. Meanwhile the sides and back may be 14- or 16-gauge sheet that yields to a decent pry bar or a cordless angle grinder far faster than the door ever would.

When comparing safes, find the body gauge. If a specification sheet quotes only door thickness and bolt count, that omission is itself informative.

Fire ratings and who did the testing

Fire ratings are the least standardised claim in the category. A meaningful fire rating has three parts, and you should insist on all three:

  • Duration — how long.
  • Furnace temperature — a 60-minute rating at 1,200 °F is a very different claim from 60 minutes at 1,700 °F.
  • Who tested it — independent laboratory or the manufacturer's own facility.

The relevant independent standard for record protection is UL 72, which classifies by the maximum interior temperature maintained during the test — Class 350 keeps the interior below 350 °F, appropriate for paper. A great many gun safes carry in-house fire claims rather than a UL 72 listing.

Two practical notes. First, interior temperature is what matters: ammunition, optics and electronics are damaged well below the point at which paper chars. Second, most fire insulation works by releasing water vapour when heated, which protects the contents but leaves the interior extremely humid afterwards — plan for that if a safe has been through a fire.

The single highest-value thing you can do

Bolt it down. An unanchored safe can be tipped over, walked out on an appliance dolly, or loaded into a vehicle and opened at leisure somewhere with no time pressure. Every certification assumes the container stays put.

Anchor into a concrete slab with appropriate sleeve or wedge anchors, or through a wooden floor into joists — not just the subfloor. Most safes ship with pre-drilled holes in the base for exactly this. It costs an afternoon and a few dollars in hardware, and it is worth more than several hundred dollars of upgrade elsewhere in the specification.

Locks

  • Mechanical dial. No battery, no electronics, decades of service life. Slow to open and you must remember the combination.
  • Electronic keypad. Fast and convenient. Has a battery and a circuit board, both of which eventually fail. Look for a UL-listed lock and confirm what the manufacturer's process is when it does fail.
  • Biometric. Fastest when it works. Readers struggle with wet, cold or dirty fingers — exactly the conditions of a bad night. Any biometric lock you depend on needs a backup you have actually practised.

A common and sensible arrangement is a mechanical dial on the main long-term safe, plus a separate quick-access lockbox for the one firearm you might need immediately.

Humidity inside the safe

A sealed steel box in a garage or basement is a condensation chamber, and fire insulation makes it worse by holding moisture. Budget for a rechargeable desiccant canister or a low-wattage dehumidifier rod, plus a hygrometer so you know rather than guess. Rust inside a safe is a common and entirely preventable way to lose value.

What to compare, in order

  1. Certification — named standard and level, verifiable.
  2. Body steel gauge, not door thickness.
  3. Whether you can and will anchor it where it's going.
  4. Fire rating with duration, temperature and testing body all stated.
  5. Lock type and documented failure procedure.
  6. Interior layout and capacity — and buy larger than you think you need, because everyone does.
