Nobody else builds these

A bullpup shotgun with two magazine tubes. A carbine that folds in half. A rimfire pistol holding 33 rounds. If you want any of those, this is effectively the only catalogue that has one.

Kel-Tec occupies a specific place in the market: it builds designs nobody else attempts, at prices nobody else matches, with ergonomics and fit that reflect both of those facts. If you want a conventional gun, buy a conventional gun. If you want a bullpup shotgun, a rifle that folds in half, or a 33-round rimfire pistol, this is essentially the only catalogue that has one.

Here is the lineup organised by what each gun is actually for.

The bullpup shotgun

Kel-Tec KSG 12ga 18.5" Black

Dual-tube bullpup
Capacity 14+1Layout BullpupFeature Selectable magazine tubes

Two magazine tubes under a bullpup layout, with a selector that lets you switch between them — buckshot in one, slugs in the other, chosen on the fly. The overall length is far shorter than a conventional pump of the same barrel length, which is the entire point. Expect a learning curve on the manual of arms and a deliberate, firm pump stroke.

The folding carbines

The SUB2000 hinges at the receiver and folds back on itself, which turns a carbine into something that fits in a backpack or a small case. That single property is why it has stayed in production through multiple generations.

Kel-Tec SUB2000 Gen3 5.7x28mm Green

Folds in half
Cartridge 5.7x28mmCapacity 20rdStored size Very small

The current generation in 5.7x28mm: flat-shooting, essentially recoil-free, and it folds. As a vehicle or pack gun where stored size is the binding constraint, nothing conventional competes. Ammunition cost is the trade you accept for the cartridge.

Kel-Tec RDB Survival 5.56 Green

Downward-ejecting bullpup
Chambering 5.56Ejection Straight downHandedness Fully ambidextrous

A 5.56 bullpup that ejects downward rather than to the side, which makes it genuinely ambidextrous — a rare property in bullpups and a serious advantage for left-handed shooters. The survival configuration strips the weight down further. SportingRifles.co covers the RDB in detail.

Kel-Tec guns reward reading the manual. These are unconventional designs and several of them have unconventional loading, folding or disassembly procedures. The complaints that circulate online are disproportionately from people operating them like a conventional gun. Spend twenty minutes with the manual and the reliability picture changes.

The rimfire oddities

Kel-Tec CP33 .22LR

33 rounds of rimfire
Capacity 33rd magazineSights Optic-ready railUse Competition and plinking

A .22 target pistol with a quad-stack magazine holding 33 rounds, a full-length optics rail and a threaded barrel. It exists for steel challenge shooters and for anyone who resents reloading. Genuinely one of the most entertaining rimfire pistols on the market, and completely unlike anything else.

Kel-Tec P17 .22LR OD Green (Threaded variant available)

Featherweight rimfire
Capacity 16+1Weight Extremely lightBarrel Threaded variant available

A very light polymer .22 pistol with a 16-round magazine and a threaded barrel option. It is a trail gun, a kit gun and a cheap trainer in one, and the weight makes it disappear in a pack. RimfireAmmo.co has more on matching rimfire pistols to roles.

What the low price actually costs you

Three things, consistently. Fit and finish are plainer than the mainstream competition, with visible mould lines and simpler coatings. Triggers are functional rather than refined, and on the bullpups the linkage adds a mushiness that no amount of break-in removes entirely. And the aftermarket is thinner: holsters, chassis parts and upgrade components exist for these guns, but nothing like the bottomless ecosystem around an AR or a common service pistol.

None of that is hidden, and none of it stops the guns doing the specific thing they were designed to do. The question to ask before buying is whether you want that specific thing badly enough to accept the rest, because on every conventional measure a conventional gun at the same price does better.

The honest summary

Kel-Tec sells engineering ambition at a low price, and the cost of that combination shows up in fit, finish and occasional fussiness rather than in whether the gun works. Buy one because you want what only it does. If you want a conventional carbine with a deep aftermarket and flawless manners, buy a conventional carbine and let this catalogue be the second purchase.

The SUB2000 and RDB Survival also sit squarely in the takedown and truck gun category, which is where several of them make the most sense.

Common questions

FAQ

Are Kel-Tec guns reliable?

They work when operated as designed, and a disproportionate share of complaints come from shooters running unconventional designs conventionally. Fit and finish are where the low price shows, not usually in function.

What is the KSG's dual magazine tube for?

It lets you load two different shell types — buckshot in one tube, slugs in the other — and switch between them with a selector, without unloading. Capacity is also far higher than a conventional pump of the same overall length.

Why does the RDB eject downward?

Downward ejection makes the bullpup genuinely ambidextrous, so a left-handed shooter is not eating brass or forced into a right-shoulder-only manual of arms. It is one of the few bullpups that solves this properly.

What is the SUB2000 folding carbine good for?

Storage and transport. It hinges at the receiver and folds back on itself, which makes it fit in a pack or small case. If stored size is the constraint you are solving for, nothing conventional competes.

Is the CP33 a serious gun or a toy?

Both, depending on use. It is a genuine steel challenge and rimfire competition pistol with a 33-round magazine, an optics rail and a threaded barrel — and it is also one of the most entertaining range guns you can buy.

Next step

Shopping for this?

Buy a Kel-Tec because you want the thing only it does. For a conventional carbine with a deep aftermarket, buy conventional.
